M101 is a gorgeous spiral galaxy in its own right. On 19 May 2023, Japanese nova-hunter Kōichi Itagaki spotted a supernova in one of its arms. This is a single star that’s visible from 21 million light year away! All the other stars in this image are in our own Milky Way, but the arrow shows that one Type-II colossal explosion.
